Macbook LCD Screen Oopsy!

You all know that I love Apple Inc. I love Macintosh computers, iPods, the whole bit (though the jury still out on the iPhone). But alas the halo has dimmed. The angel’s wings have been clipped.

You see, this past Sunday, an accident of freakish proportions happened. Lyndsay had sat the Macbook down and walked away. The place where she sat it was below a book shelf upon which sat a speaker system. Somehow (possibly invisible goblins) some books that were on the shelf with the sub woofer fell over and pushed the sub woofer off the shelf and onto the Macbook shattering the screen. I Am Discovering My Ancestry

I have started working on my family tree at Ancestry.com.  This is something I have talked much about doing and thanks to some help and encouragement from Stephen, I have take the leap.

My family tree is a black box to me.  I know practically nothing about any of my ancestors that died before I was born.  This is mostly due to the fact that my parents divorced when I was two years old so I never had much time to discuss such thing with my father. What little I know about my father’s side of the family came from the little information that my mother told me and snippets here and there from my father throughout the years.  I know my paternal grandfather’s name was William Elmer Horne. I know where he’s buried (in a cemetery just north of Byron, GA).  Prior to my research I did not know his parents’ names. I have since discovered that his father was John Benjamin Horn (yes, without the “E”). And John B.’s father was Joshua Lawrence James Horn.  His father was Joshua Lawrence Horn.  The cool thing is I was not purposefully named after either of them. However despite these interesting early discoveries I have a lot of research to do.  I will begin with my father’s oldest sister. I figured she would know and remember the most about my late grandfather and his parents. Continue reading ‘I Am Discovering My Ancestry’

I’m a Marvel…And I’m a DC

You are no doubt familiar with the famous Mac vs. PC commercials by Apple Inc. Well some clever person has spoofed those commercials using a Marvel vs. DC format. If you do not know Marvel and DC are the two main comic book publishers. The YouTube video series includes spoofs with Batman, Spiderman, the Hulk, Iron Man and others. The following videos are with Batman and Iron Man and are two of the funniest that I have seen.

8 Wonderful Years

Today Lyndsay and I celebrate our 8 year wedding anniversary.

I remember being very relaxed on our wedding day. I had a great time catching up with my friends and groomsmen and talking with my dad. I didn’t have the jitters at all. That is until that famous march began to play and Lyndsay walked through the double doors. I felt my stomach drop. This was not because I was afraid or worried but because the whole scene was so surreal. You spend you life watching weddings happen on TV, movies, to other people and then you hear the music, you see the bride and YOU’RE the groom. It was unreal and wonderful.

Lyndsay is the perfect wife and friend for me. We were so different when we met in 1999 that it’s a wonder we made it so far. We liked different kinds of books, movies, humor, you name it. But now we could not be more alike in so many ways. The Lord has made us one flesh and I am forever grateful to Him for my ZZ.

A Word About Comedy, Chickens, and How To Avoid Rudeness

Once upon a time some clever man observing some nearby fowl happened upon the queerest thought. So queer in fact the absurdity and sarcasm of it made him chuckle. I like to think that this is the beginning of the world’s oldest joke. Perhaps this man was with some friends soon thereafter who were exchanging humorous stories when he spoke up:

Man: Say, I’ve a question for you. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Friend: *thoughtful*I’m sure I don’t know.
Man: Why, to get to the other side of course!
Friend: *genuinely delighted* Ha! Now that was clever! I didn’t see that coming! Continue reading ‘A Word About Comedy, Chickens, and How To Avoid Rudeness’

Predestination Misunderstanding Part II: Vessels of Honor and Destruction

If you did not catch the first part of this article, you should probably read it. This article will make sense on its own, but to get the big picture read part I. I am trying to keep this simple and to the point. It’s difficult. But we’ll see what happens.  If it gets too bogged down for you just see where I "cut to the chase" near the end.

The ninth chapter of Paul’s epistle to the believers in Rome is a central passage of scripture for those who believe in the doctrine of predestination or unconditional election. Though I felt that unconditional election (UE) conflicted with other scriptures such as Isaiah 1:15-18 and Ezekiel 18:30-31, passages like Romans 9 has kept me from dismissing it out of hand. Also I respect John Calvin and his teaching. Furthermore Martin Luther believed in election. I am not so bold that I will claim to understand the scriptures better than these two giants. They dedicated their very lives to the study, defense, and teaching of scripture. I do well if I can just find time to read my Bible everyday. So I hold these great teachers in high esteem. However I do see points of scripture that are not consistent with UE. Continue reading ‘Predestination Misunderstanding Part II: Vessels of Honor and Destruction’

Firefox 3

For those who keep up with tech news you have probably heard that Firefox 3 is in the works. It has been in development for about two years. There are promised to be numerous features including increased browsing speed, one-click bookmarking, better security and anti-phishing measures, smart location bar,and many many other things that have techy names but don’t mean much until you actually use them.

Well finally Mozilla has released that the launch date for Firefox 3 is June 17th. Furthermore there is a report that Mozilla is attempting to set a Guinness world record by having Firefox 3 become the most downloaded software in one day. I for one plan on downloading Firefox 3 right away. However I will keep Firefox 2 just in case. Many of you know the problems that software early adopters have to put up with. However my past experience with Firefox upgrades has been good so I expect it to be a painless experience.

So I will do my part to help Mozilla make their world record. How about you?

Predestination: A Misunderstanding of Jew vs. Gentile In the New Covenant?

This is going to be long, but I will keep it simple.

I have long considered myself to be “pretty much” a Calvinist. Now do not let that word scare you off. I am not about to launch into the deep murky waters of arguing the most minute points of theology. I find such conversations to be divisive and they often miss the point of such discussions, namely to become more familiar with God and His word. Those kinds of conversations turn into a striving to be right. Unfortunately Calvinists/Reformed folks are notoriously confrontational in matters of theology. This is not where I am going.

For those who are not sure exactly what I mean by Calvinism, I am referring to the system of theology which focuses mostly on the topic of soteriology (how we are saved) and can be summed up by the very handy acrostic T.U.L.I.P. Following is an explanation of these five points of Calvinism. After each you will see a number that tells how much I agree with that particular point on a scale of 1 to 10. Lightning Storm, Broken Network, Stuff at Work, and Other Things in My Life

Alright, guys and gals I am back in action. After a brief hiatus due to a lightning storm and a subsequently damaged modem I am back. Though computer-wise I am not back up to exactly where I was before. I have good reason to believe the lightning damaged my Mac Mini desktop computer. My Macbook is fine and I can still get online wirelessly same as I could before. But my Mac Mini no longer recognizes when I plug in an Lightning, I defy you! Ethernet cable (for those who aren’t down, the Ethernet or networking cable connects my Mac Mini to the router thus allowing it to get online as well as access my other computer). Granted we hardly ever use the Mac Mini for getting online and I only use it occasionally for managing some files, so it is not a huge problem for it to be unable to get on the network right now. Though one irritation is that I have my network set up so that my two computers can share my one printer even though the printer is only hooked up to my Mac Mini. Well now, in order to print from my wireless Macbook I have to go physically plug in the printer to the Macbook which I didn’t have to do before.

Stuff At Work

Work has been a nail biting experience lately. The first of the year we found out that there would be a delay in the renewing of one of our major contracts. This particular contract is also a huge source of income and workload for us. It has been a very secure contract in the past but due to some hold ups in the contracting office on base, it was delayed until the fall of this year. This resulted in the laying off of several of our personnel. Continue reading ‘Lightning Storm, Broken Network, Stuff at Work, and Other Things in My Life’
