Public Service Announcement

Okay, my wife tells me that sometimes I explain things too much and that it seems as though I doubt the other person’s competence in the task at hand. But I can not help it! I want to make sure people properly understand me or the thing they are supposed to be understanding. So if I am telling you some no-brainer information, please forgive me.

I want to nip in the bud some potential misunderstanding in how this blog works. Now without a doubt the best way to keep up with when I post (or when comments are posted) to the Smoak House is to subscribe via the RSS links to the right. There are a number of great RSS readers that can help you keep up with when your favorite blogs are updated. If you need help let me know.

However if you choose to simply just go and check all your favorite blogs each day to see if they are updated then I want you to be careful in how you interpret the Smoak House. The “Featured” article is not necessarily the newest. It is simply a way for me to highlight a particular article. If you scroll down below the Featured article you will find regular articles. I may post a Featured article and leave it up for a week but during that time I may post 3 or 4 regular articles but you have to scroll down below the Featured article to see those.

I was just noticing that my featured articles often got comments whereas my regular ones did not get as many (basically only the people that I know use RSS readers were commenting on the regular ones). Of course maybe my regular posts are less interesting or interesting to fewer people. That’s always a possibility.

So my apologies if I have insulted any one’s intelligence, but I felt that I needed to mention this just in case anyone was confused by the whole Featured article thing.

The Book of James, Chapter 4

Over the last several months I have had an on-again-off-again personal study of the book of James going. Here are some thoughts I had as I was recently studying James 4:1-4.

“Every good and perfect gift comes from above…” (James 1:16). If what I desire is good, pleasing, and perfect then it will come from above. If I lust after a thing (even if it is an otherwise good thing) the I will have twisted the desire into something evil and ungodly. A Godly wife is a good thing, but to lust after a girl (who may make a good, Godly wife) or to covet another’s is sin.

Lust and covetousness for any thing, pleasure, or possession is sin. And once the thing is gained, it is wholly unsatisfying to the lustful, covetous heart. Ask God for what you need and He will give a good and perfect gift.

Na Day 3

There\'s an arrow.

Today we heard Eric Simmons and John Piper (twice). Both talks were very good. Being a history buff I was most thrilled by the topic of Piper’s first talk, “William Tyndale”. What an awesome guy he was! Anyway here are some photos we’ve taken throughout the day. Also be on the look out for some photos on Lyndsay’s site.

New Attitude Days 1 & 2

Here’s a slide show of pictures we took during the first 2 days (or actually day and a half) of New Attitude 2008 in Louisville, KY. We are getting some good teaching. Saturday night we heard from Joshua Harris. Today (Sunday) we have heard from Mark Dever, Al Mohler, and C.J. Mahaney. Keep praying for us that God will continue to teach us from His word. There’s also a short video below the slide show.

How About a List About Me?

Well both Lyndsay and Heather created some great lists of things about themselves. Heather made a whopping 100 hundred item list! Lyndsay came in second with an impressive 60. Me? I’ll just go until I can’t think of anything else about myself. I’ll try to make it things no one knows (except Lyndsay, she pretty much knows everything about me).

  1. From the time I was 3 until I was about 9 I would occasionally have seizures. The type I had were called grand mal seizures. The doctors never figured out what caused them.
  2. I had a cat named Sam when I was young
  3. Before that I had a small dog named Smut (he was all black)
  4. I have a half-brother named Jake (we have the same mother)
  5. I also have two other half-brothers named Cody and Dylan Continue reading ‘How About a List About Me?’

Benny Hinn’s Holy Spirit Coat

“Holy Spirit” my foot! He simply put bricks in his jacket pockets before going on stage. I see through this charlatan’s tricks!

Our Trip to the Renaissance Festival

As promised, here is a slideshow and a video of our trip to the 2008 Georgia Renaissance Festival. We had a great time with our friends Ryan, Nathan, Rusty, Jud, and Liz. We saw some neat shows, ate some great food (turkey legs, Cod fist sandwich, roasted corn on the cob, frozen chocolate-covered bananas) and even saw an awesome costume of Treebeard from the Lord of the Rings (which you will see in the video). Enjoy!

Strange Song, Cool Video

This is a music video for the song “Again & Again” by The Birds and The Bees (I never heard of them either) that was made completely on a Mac. What I mean is all of the effects and camera shots were created using applications that come natively on a Mac. It obviously took a lot of time to make this. I am impressed (though only with the video; the song just ain’t my style).

The 2008 Georgia Renaissance Festival

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 17) Lyndsay and I will be embarking on a trip to Atlanta to spend the day at the Georgia Renaissance Festival in Atlanta. We will spend the day with friends watching jousts, taking in horse exhibitions, a sword swallower, and eating a variety of foods. Also we will get to see folks demonstrating medieval artisans such as a blacksmith.

The festival runs from April 12 to June 1 and operates on weekends. Each weekend has a particular theme and this weekend’s theme is Pirates! So we will get to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day a little early this year! We will be leaving tomorrow morning and return some time in the evening. We plan on taking plenty of pictures and sharing them here and on Lyndsay’s site.

Live the Dream

There are a whole lot of “guy” stereotypes out there. These make for easy jokes, even among guys themselves. There are stereotypes such as all men like getting together with their buddies to snack, drink beer, and watch a Sunday football game. Another stereotype is that when guys get together they burp and fart a lot (sorry, ladies I couldn’t think of any good euphemisms for these). Let’s see, what are some more? Oh, there’s the stereotypes that guys only like movies with high body counts, half-clad women and lots of cussing. I am reminded of TBS when they used to advertise their “Movies for Guys Who Like Movies” and the films shown were always those types of action films. Another stereotype is that men have certain dream sports cars that they lust over. Some lucky ones get to own their dream car (and they give a female name and treat it like a child).
