I have been fortunate once again to receive an invitation from my old friend Matt Evans to play with him at yet another gig. This time we will be taking another trip down Florida way to play for a Panama City beach retreat. This is the second time I have had the pleasure of joining Matt and Clay at the beach for some singing, sun and fun. Continue reading ‘We Had Joy, We Had Fun, We Had Concerts In the Sun’

Take a gander at these photos taken at the Spring 2008 CGVN Gathering. It was held at Olympia Skate Center in Warner Robins. I fell more than I usually do but I think that is because I was busy playing tag with the younger guys who were on roller blades (which are apparently easier to maneuver than the 4 wheel skates I was using).
Yay! I have finally got Gravatars on my comments. Now to some of you that first statement sounded like some Josh H. gibberish. Allow me to explain.
An avatar is a small picture or image that forum and blog users have that displays beside their names whenever they post a comment or a forum thread. It serves no real purpose other than just being a nifty custom identifier. Some people use actual photos of themselves, some have pictures of their pets or kids and some have avatars featuring their favorite band. Continue reading ‘Put a Little Avatar in Your Heart’
When I started playing guitar at the ripe age of fourteen, my goal was to be the best guitar player at my school. Within my first year I began learning some very difficult songs. I also learned solos by Jimi Hendrix and Slash which took me tedious hours to get them down pat. Once I reached college I started playing only Christian music with a band called Mordecai’s Courage. The music we began to write together was of a different nature than what I had grown up learning. It was more melodic and did not require so much of the “shredding” and rippin’ blues licks that I was used to. This proved to be a challenge for me but over time I was able to change my style in order to accommodate the alternative rock that MC was creating. By the time MC called it quits around 2003 I had become quite comfortable with playing more melodious lead guitar. Continue reading ‘Getting A Little Too Satisfied With The Status Quo’

Ugly But Effective
In the past couple of months I have been researching and learning more about digital television and how it works. All of this is in the light of my purchase of a Vizio HDTV in December and the announcement that all networks will broadcast in digital starting February 2009. Now I consider myself to be “up” on all the new technology. I am a geek. I have no problem with that. But right before I bought my TV I learned (from my friend David Plunk) about off-the-air digital television. You can purchase special “bunny ears” antennae that are able to receive not only traditional analog signals but also digital signals. So if you are in range of a network that broadcasts their digital signal over the air, then you can capture it with your HDTV antenna and the difference in quality and sound is amazing. It literally looks like you are watching cable or satellite. Continue reading ‘Ugly But Effective’
This past weekend in Alabama was loads of fun. It was great seeing our friends Clay/Hannah, Matt/Karen, Heath/Ann, Stephen, and Brandon. Also we met a great guy named Cory who was in charge of preaching the messages we heard during the various sessions throughout the weekend. His focus was God’s word. The truth he taught those teenagers (and us) was sound and very encouraging. Thanks, Cory!
However there was one aspect of the weekend that could have gone a little better. Really it was my fault because of a poor judgment call. You see, I just played with these guys back in February. Part of my preparation for that weekend was to change the strings on my Gibson Les Paul. However I have not played it since then and when it came time to change the strings for this weekend I decided against it. I really did not have that much time for last week was very busy and also I did not think they could be that bad off. Well “bad off” it was. Friday night went off without a hitch. But then Saturday morning was a little, shall we say, worse. Continue reading ‘Tune Up That Guitar…’Bama Style!’
Get Expelled Next Week
Recently Stephen at Undeception discussed intelligent design (and before that referred his readers to an Oklahoma bill related to creationism). This has gotten to think about the creation/evolution debate, which will probably never be definitively settled “this side of eternity”, as the saying goes. So being that this argument has been on my mind, my interest piqued when I heard the intro to a recent episode of the Focus on the Family radio program. Continue reading ‘Get Expelled Next Week’
This weekend I once again get to live out a small piece of my childhood dream of being a rock star. My good friend and former bandmate, Matt Evans, will be leading worship for a Disciple Now weekend in Scottsboro, AL and has graciously asked me to join him again along with our buddies Clay and Heath (also known as The Untouchable Rhythm Section–actually no one calls them that, but those guys deserve a title). Each time I have a chance to play with these guys I try to come up with a good idea for a temporary band name. To date my ideas haven’t been taken seriously. For this weekend I submit that we call ourselves The Upper ‘Bama Boys. Chances are the guys won’t go for this one either but it’s worth a shot. It is a great improvement over the other ideas I had for this weekend. My other temporary band name idea was Ear Canal but I decided to scrap it because I felt it failed to capture the spirit of the group. My third idea was Finger Pullin’ Good but that’s just disturbing. Continue reading ‘Rockin’ In the Free World’
